Happy Deepavali by the way. I am having a fairly quiet evening this festival of lights, consisting mostly of light music and casual reading.
Here’s something interesting I came across. Ted Underwood, a Professor of English Literature at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, examines a claim that significant cultural transitions in history can be quantitatively identified and measured. He takes a study of popular (western) music between 1960 and 2010, applying to his own domain, 19th Century English Literature. He then tries to see if he can match the points of transition recorded by this method to periods that are considered significant in existing research or discourses.
The results, as expected, are fairly complex. Read for yourselves. http://wp.me/p1fHxQ-1wB
